Those of you who have followed my blog for awhile know that I am crazy about concrete countertops…or well about concrete anything. I love the simple lines, the texture……We did concrete countertops at our lake house and I love them. I ended up finishing the edges myself etc. etc etc. He said it would take four days…it took a lifetime…In spite of all that I do love the look of the countertops. However Paso does get quite a bit of seismic activity and concrete can crack. I don’t mind that I personally like imperfection, and concrete counters are also very expensive. Especially if you hire a really good contractor (ahem…we were being cheap at the lake and didn’t) My husband has a great group “the Miller Boys” who do a fabulous job …as I said we were being cheap. Well to get on with the story the latest thing is concrete overlay. A skilled artisan can go over your existing tile (as long as it isn’t too uneven (ours was), any old awful surface including formica, you name it. Enter Brenda Davis Brendadavispainting.com. I worked with her on another small project and I was very impressed with her attention to detail. She did a few samples and we were HOOKED!!

Here are a view of the components, completed cabinet door, counter and tile. Note the tiny gray dots in the Tabarka Meditteranean 8 tile. We wanted the counters to mimic that grey.
Here is a peek at the fabrics I will be using on the pillows in the adjoining family room. Kelly Wearstler for Groundworks, Sand Strie Charcoal, Peter Dunham Gattopardo Siberiano, Peter Dunham Kashmir Paisley in Tea Red. I have been aching to use the Peter Dunham fabrics for awhile but I hate that 5 yard minimum!
Our laundry room is so outdated it is beyond even discussing. Brenda did a sort of soapstone imitation overlay in there. It is very hard to photograph as it is so dark in there. The counters are a mix of a deep charcoal and black. The surface almost looks like leather.
I can’t go into too much detail with photos until after publication. You all know that could be after we are all dead and gone…well not really but it does take awhile. Our little kitchen that we did will be coming up in the next issue of Kitchen and Bath Makeovers coming out the end of May I will keep you posted on that!

Love the countertops. I had Formica that I covered in zinc. This sounds like a similar install if you have level countertops. Can cracks be repaired?
I had no idea that they could do concrete countertops over other surfaces like Formica – I might not have lived with my horrible mint green formica for so many years if I had had a clue! Absolutely love how your countertops looks – great texture and color. And I'm still coveting that tile…

Cindy, this is so fabulous – and exactly what I want to do in our Rhode Island cottage (existing green formica is killing me.) Hopefully I can find someone because I am hopeless at anything DIY. Love those fabrics, too!
