As I stated in my previous post this little house had great bones. The board and batten detailing predominates in most of the house. The open beam ceilings, and hardwood floors were another bonus. The dining room was not an exception. Here is a real estate photo before.
The hardwood floors were in great shape. The ceiling was dark which brought the ceiling down and made the room seem smaller . It took a little convincing but the “boys” agreed to whitewash the ceilings. I honestly wanted to just paint them white but my husband prevailed and I think the effect is very nice. The wood wainscoting was given a fresh coat of Benjamin Moore White Dove. If you are following this series https://cindyhattersleydesign.com/2012/08/we-bought-little-cottage.html you know that I wanted to get rid of the ‘rick rack” detail on the built in. It would have been a huge project and too many $$$. In the end once it was styled up a bit it no longer bothered me. The original cabinet hardware was lovely but just dated the piece. We replaced them with simple wood knobs that were painted the same color of the built in.

Pendant drum shade is from Shades of Light here http://www.shadesoflight.com/16-34-euro-fitter-trellis-linen-drum-lampshade.html. You can buy a little kit at Home Depot to convert it to a pendant light for $9.99.

The walls in the kitchen, living, bathrooms, dining and hall are all painted Halo by Benjamin Moore. I am crazy about this color. Depending on the light it varies from gray to almost a buckskin.

All of the trim in the house along with the built in is painted white dove by Benjamin Moore. I really like the combination of the two of these colors. There is just enough contrast between the two and they should complement almost anyone’s furnishings.
The details…The funny paper mache deer is on sale at World Market for $50. The white washed tray is from World Market as well.
The paper mache letters are from Beverly Fabrics and can be found at Michaels as well. The bleached wood charger and the square whitewashed charger are from World Market. The burlap box is from Beverly’s. I used two of them in the kitchen (see my previous post).

After… We opted for simple changes. The walls were also painted halo by Benjamin Moore and the trim white dove The ceilings were painted white dove as well and then scraped to allow the original wood to peek through.
The green paint was removed from the brick on the fireplace. The ceiling fan was removed and a few recessed cans were strategically placed around the room.
Things I might have done or might if I were the new owner….The brick on the fireplace might look a little nicer whitewashed but the hearth would have to be replaced as well. We ultimately left the brick natural so the hearth would blend in. The white oak floors were in excellent condition so were left as is.
The fireplace was simply styled with a mirror borrowed from my son and daughter in law (found at the Alameda Flea Market), and simple white vases found on sale at Pier One.
In my next post I will cover the bathrooms and bedrooms and remaining lighting sources etc.

What an amazing job you did on this home. The ceilings are so pretty. I love what you did with the built in too. The paint colors are perfect. Thanks for sharing them. I had my last home painted a color similar to halo that is no longer around. I am going to check it out at the paint store this week. It's just the right color with whites.
The kitchen is divine too! You guys do great work and you do a great job selecting the finishes. Someone is going to be very lucky to live there.

Hi Cindy, I think the ceiling treatment is pure genius. I really love it and don't think it would have been as interesting if it was painted white. Your shelf and mantle styling are spot on as well. What a dreamy house; one could only be happy there – how lucky the new owners are. Nice work!

Adore the white washed ceiling. Have a beam needing the same thing in my parlor, will use your color.
