We Bought a Little Cottage….Kitchen Reveal!

About four months ago we bough a little cottage (fixer upper)  to flip. You can read about it here https://cindyhattersleydesign.com/2012/08/we-bought-little-cottage.html The house had great bones and a lot of character to begin with but it needed a little TLC. I had planned to document progress weekly but other jobs intervened and tey took priority so here we are! All of my sources and inspiration photos for this little house can be found on my pinterest board here http://pinterest.com/chattersley/hawthorne/                                                       Here are a couple of  real estate photos of the  kitchen before image  image                                                                                    During the Demo   image                               Colin and Steve (and Lauren) spent hours removing the hideous linoleum and all the staples.                                                                                                                                          Here are the after photos image   If I were the buyer of this house I would hang Hunter Douglas grass (or something similar) blinds all the way to the ceiling on each window to disguise the funny windows.   Steve wondered about installing the tile to the top of the windows over the sink…he may have been right! The pendant lights are the Home Depot polished nickel kettle pendants for $79.99.   image   Aren’t they great?  The clock is from World Market.  You can buy it here http://www.worldmarket.com/product/world-clock.do?&from=Search for $79.99.   image   All of the cabinets are from IKEA as well as the farmhouse sink.  The faucet is from Elements of Design. I personally thought the quality of the IKEA faucets was lacking.  This brand does a good job while keeping the price point reasonable. I purchased this one from efaucets.com. They are constantly having sales and I got this faucet for around $175   Elements of Design ES1771ALLS   The cabinet hardware is from Home Depot.  The bin pulls are from the Martha Stewart Collection. The knobs are from Home Depots Liberty Collection.  I did not care for Martha’s companion knob.                                                    The countertop is absolut noir (caesar stone)  from IKEA as well.    image       Back of the Kitchen during demo   image   Back of the Kitchen  Now.  They moved the  water heater to a more (and safer) location and look at all the cupboards they gained. Knife and Spoon Art are from World Market.  The floors are original vertical grained douglas fir (found under the linoleum). We decided to give the kitchen a sleeker look with the dark floors.     image   A shot of the stove and hood, both from IKEA   image   Tile is inexpensive subway tile with charcoal grout. The tile can be found at either Lowes or Home Depot.  It is extremely reasonable and in my opinion has great bang for the buck.  We debated about using white grout or charcoal grout. In the end we decided to use the charcoal grout for a more modern look to tie it in with the black counters and dark floors. We decided against it in the bathrooms as you will see in a following post.    image    A final note…anyone skeptical of using IKEA cabinets and counters ( I know I was!) we were extremely surprised.  My husband and son do very  high end work.  It was hard for me to convince them to consider IKEA cabinets.  The hinges and drawer guides are some of the best on the market.  The quartz counters are contracted out to local fabricators.  Consequently you get a lot of bang for your buck. In my next post I will cover the dining room and living room makeovers.  Here is a sneak peak looking from the kitchen into the dining area.   image     I would also like to thank all of you who have so graciously read, commented and supported my blog.  I can’t tell you how much I appreciate all of your suggestions and input.  I hope you are enjoying some wonderful family time and have the Happiest of New Years!

Hi Cindy…Happy New Year! I finally had a moment to sit down and read this post! what a major change….Amazing. I love all of your choices and think anyone would love that kitchen. I wondered about Ikea cabinets and even the Martha Stewart cabinets from Home Depot. Your's look so great and it is interesting that it all fit so well with everything being stock and not custom.
I would love to know what color you painted the walls…it looks just great with the white and grey!

Great looking kitchen remodel! Thanks for yours and your pro family's opinion on the cabs. They look good in the store, but I have been so skeptical of their ability to wear well in real life. I'll have to look again to see what they are actually made of.

    Happy New Year!

      Hi Donna

Keep in mind they are not "custom". The hinges and drawer guides are top grade which is paramount. Many developers in the city are using them in their condo complexes. Give them a try if you would like to save your pennies for other areas!

    Hi Cindy,
Your house looks beautiful. I had no idea an IKEA kitchen could look so high end. Your choice of finishes and extra touches takes the place to another level. I'm sure your buyers will 'flip' for it! What a fun project. I'm grateful our paths have crossed in blogging. I find such inspiration in your posts and designs. Wishing you and yours a fabulous New Year.
    Cheers, xx Heather

    Cindy,
Great job! I have been skeptical about Ikea cabinets too. I agree about the faucets they have. You did an amazing job on this house. Congratulations … hope it sells soon.

Fabulous, Cindy! Thanks for sharing all the sources. Tom and I are getting ready to design / move forward with our basement's small kitchen. We've been visiting Ikea frequently. Love their look but not sure about the quality. Do their cabinets come in pieces? Not assembled? We also want caesar stone. Look forward to seeing more of this cottage.

The kitchen looks wonderful. I always thought IKEA kitchens had great style for the price, but it is good to know they are made so well. Thanks for all the sources. I look forward to the bathroom transformation as I am about to undertake one in my home. Have a happy New Year.
    Best…Victoria
