Dramatic Before and After Family Room Reveal

A couple of weeks ago I showed you the Kitchen of this Carmel Valley Project. The walls of the tiny kitchen were torn out and we created an open plan for the entire space.  The kitchen and family room are only separated from the unfinished living/dining area by a huge barn door that can be opened and closed as needed. Let’s check out the Dramatic Before and After Family Room Reveal.

The centerpiece of the now open plan remodel was the beautiful limestone fireplace. The fireplace, beams, tongue and groove ceiling and of course the incredible views were keepers. The young family loved the neighborhood and had the vision to look beyond this home’s weaknesses.

When I first visited the project this fireplace had me at Hello. I loved the unusual fossiling and creative pattern. You know how I love texture.  I thought the fireplace should provide the frame of reference for all of the other surfaces in the remodel. We chose reclaimed look oak flooring, stained oak for the entertainment center, and a gray limestone slab for the top.  Every surface echoed a color found in the fireplace.

The sofas were custom built and covered in Perennials Raffia Gravel Path. The reclaimed wood coffee table is from Dovetail and available from Cindy Hattersley Design.  The Desa Bordered Rug is from Pottery Barn and is on sale. You can find it along with other items in the room in  Shop the Look at the bottom of the page.

You can get a glimpse of the gorgeous views in this before picture.  They were obstructed by the dark interior.  We replaced all of the windows and added french doors to access the outside where needed.

Similar view after the remodel.  Track lighting was added.  The ceilings were whitewashed and the beams finished to reflect the stained island base and hood in the kitchen.

The wall to the left was once an odd closeted bar and dated built-in.

On that same wall now houses a beautiful custom oak entertainment center that was designed by Steve and I and built by Shoreline Woodworks.  Beautiful finish by Steve Ford Painting. The room off to the left is the entry.  We wanted the finish to be similar to the floors and beams. Brian Ford and his team as always completed the vision.

Nancy Anne Designs from Etsy fabricated the black and white mudcloth pillows as well as the pillows on the rattan butterfly chairs.  Chairs also available from Cindy Hattersley Design.  Similar chairs from World Market if you Shop the Look below.

The entryway was dark but the footprint was okay.  Here is the entryway before the remodel. This view looks into the living/dining space which is not yet completed. We replaced the doors with ones that suited the new space, tore out all the dark paneling and replaced the light fixture.

We closed off the opening to the kitchen and created a wall for this great metal console from Dovetail. The mirror also is from Dovetail (similar mirror from Restoration Hardware here).  The paintings were done by the couple’s children  You can purchase kits from pat huber fine art. All accessories available below

I hope you enjoyed this Dramatic Family Room Reveal. The living-dining area is still a work in progress.  There are more important priorities like the kids bedrooms and baths. I will post more as it evolves.  If you have any questions about any of the selections feel free to email me. If you enjoyed this post you might want to check out the Dramatic Before and After Kitchen Reveal of the same house.

What an incredible transformation! That took a lot of vision to take it from what it was to the bright space it is now. Love it!

Great job! So inspiring! What an eye you have to have seen through the “before”, the “after” is amazing!

Cindy absolutely gorgeous! I love how you used the fireplace as your inspiration for color. I am doing the same in my remodel. I am building a limestone fireplace, inspired by a wall of fossil stone my grandparents had in their mid-century home when I was growing up.
I love the natural chairs, floors couches and all the pretty accents. This is a beautiful home! You have an amazing eye for this stuff! Love it. Kim

    Hi Cindy,

Lovely remodel. You state that you kept the tongue and groove ceiling. Did you paint it? In the after pictures the ceiling looks white so I am curious.

    Thanks so much,
    Janie

      Hi Janie

We whitewashed it. What the painters do is brush white paint over the raw or stained wood and “knife” it off with a putty knife. That way some of the wood tones show through.

THIS IS ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!!! Love what you did with the beams and your color inspiration. Also the circle motif in the entry…so cool. Everything complements the amazing views. They are so lucky to have you and Steve!!

As always – perfection! Especially love how you lightened the room with the whitewashed ceiling.
