Ageless Style – Beth Djalali of Style at a Certain Age

Welcome back to Ageless Style. If you are new here every month the Vintage Contessa and I interview someone over 50 with great style. Elizabeth and I took December off but we are back today with the latest edition of our Monthly collaboration.  I am so excited to interview Beth from “Style at a Certain Age” today.

I started following Beth because well I LOVE her hair, she is a midwestern girl (like myself) and she loves her dog.  Beth is Audrey Hepburn with Gray hair. She carries off that “girl next door look with confidence and flair. She is not afraid of color, but she usually keeps her accessories to a minimum.  Let’s see what advice Beth has for us.

How Would You Describe Your Style? American Classic

j.crew cashmere sweater, old navy rockstar jeans, talbots puffer jacket, talbots scarf, everlane loafers

What Inspires your signature style? I’ve always been drawn to a clean, simple aesthetic. Nothing too fussy for me. Every chance I get I love to throw in something that’s borrowed from the boys.

r & r

What accessory Can You Not Do Without? A watch. Even though my phone can tell me the time of day nothing compares to checking your watch. If I forget to put one on in the morning I feel naked the rest of the day.

Favorite Color? Hands down it’s pink. This is a color that goes from shocking pink to blush with so many hues in between. And pink goes with almost every color on the color wheel. I know because I try to sneak this color in every chance I get. My favorite color combo is navy and pink. It’s preppy and chic.

Do you have a signature piece that defines your style? I will always own at least one white shirt. And I’m always on the hunt for the one. It’s like looking for the holy grail. (Check out Beth’s youtube video about styling white shirts below)

What are your style strengths? Putting my own spin on an iconic look.

red stadium coat, striped crewneck, white denim, red hunter boots, houndstooth cashmere scarf

Do you have a style icon? There are so many to choose from especially when it comes to classic style but currently, I have a style crush on Giovanna Battaglia. I can count on her for a fresh take on the classics. Plus, she integrates pattern and color into her wardrobe like no other.

giovanna-battaglia

What are the beauty essentials that you can’t do without? A good skincare regimen is a must. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize. This year I added a cleansing oil into my nighttime routine which removes any trace of makeup in a blink. Absolutely can’t live without this product. But the real game changer has been adding a Vitamin C oil into the mix. My skin is noticeably brighter. (Okay you sold me Beth).  Maybe she will share her favorite! Look at her skin!

style formula

Do you have repeat offenders in your closet if so what are they? I refer to them as the 4B’s – blazer, button-up, blue jeans, and ballet flats. I could easily wear this style uniform every day.

a new day blazer, j.crew cashmere vest, j.crew striped shirt, banana republic denim, michael kors handbag, tahari smoking slippers

What advice do you have for women over 50, or over 40? To look forward not behind. Your best days are still ahead of you. And you can look great while chasing your dreams because style has no expiration date.

Do you have any style rules that you live by? The only style rule I’ve consistently followed is dress for the occasion.work it | styleatacertainage #spons #JTVSpringStatements

What are your favorite online go to sources? Currently, Everlane gets my vote.

Do you have a particular designer that you are drawn to? Ralph Lauren. This brand epitomizes American Classic like no other.

She has definitely figured out her style and what works for her! So polished…… I love her hair and boy would I like to go natural but my colorist said I’m gray in the front but not the back:)

      Hi Sherry
I still have a bit of the skunk strip in the back as well. You would look gorgeous gray!

  6. Patty says

The best word I can think of is WOW! I am not a fashionista (but do love to see beautifully put together women) and I have been trying to identify what ‘style’ appeals to me and is appropriate for my lifestyle. This is it! I have a very casual work environment and almost non existent social life, so it is difficult to get motivated to put in the effort to look good. However, as I age (turning 58 next month), I want to up my game so I don’t turn into a total frump and just give up. Thank you for introducing Beth – I will be an avid follower and see what I can incorporate into my lifestyle.

    • Beth says

hi patty! i’m so happy you discovered my blog thanks to cindy and this marvelous ageless series she and the contessa put together. you can’t go wrong with classic style as it appeals to twenty-one-year-olds or eighty-one-year-olds alike. and so many items can be mixed and matched to your heart’s content. many women think i own a lot of clothes. not really, it’s all about how i rotate basics items on a daily basis. once you learn how to do that your closet will work for you day in and day out.

Cindy, you always find the chicest women! I’ve been following Beth for awhile on Instagram and she manages to always look so confident and elegant! I’m also looking for THE perfect white button down! I hope that when she finds it she’ll fill us in!

    • Beth says

hi jill! absolutely love your work. it looks as if the two of us have a few things in common. like white shirts. we need to plan a shopping spree so we can score the perfect one.
      xo

    • Cindy says

Thanks Jill! I have been “badgering” the Contessa for snagging you! We so love it when we find two inspiring women like you and Beth, and of course I love that you both have beautiful gray hair!!

  9. Taste of France says

The first photo grabbed me: That hair! Then I saw your comment about her hair. She really has a fantastic cut–even though it’s short she manages to style it differently and it always looks great. I suspect that, besides an excellent cut, she also is blessed with good hair.
Her style fits right with my tastes, and is not so different from Jill Anthony, featured chez La Contessa. Classic, not fussy. How two women make it their own. The shot near the top with the red scarf–she is walking so straight and confidently. Posture is so important! I also love the shot with the gray blazer–the “don’t even THINK about pulling anything” look. I must practice that one. The photo just below it, with the beige poncho, is my favorite–the neutrals, the hint of white shirt, the straight skirt, the spectator shoes. Wonderful.

    • beth says

loved the interview with jill anthony! what a talented woman. thanks so much for your kind words. and i think i perfected that look while raising three boys. they knew right away that they better stop their nonsense even if i was waaay across the room.

  10. Sandra Sallin-Apart From My Art says

I remember her when. What a talent. I guess it was her hair that first drew me to her. Then it was the way she posed. It ain’t easy. She has an effortless way of putting herself together, Very stylish and American looking. I want to know how large is your closet? You are the most prolific poster. Also, tell us about your vitamin C. Congratulations on building your brand! Wish you were still in San Francisco so we could visit.

    • beth says

sandra, you always know just what to say! thanks sweet friend. if i’d only known when we snapped those photos before i headed off to work five days a week that i was setting the standard for the blog. do you think my readers would revolt if i pared back? but mr. style and i have great fun while we’re on our photo shoots so i guess we’ll keep at it while we can!
a big kiss from me to you.
